Minisforum GK50 Mini PC

Back in the day having a home PC meant dedicating a corner of your room to a desk to house the tower, keyboard, monitor and mouse, not to mention trails of wires and disks everywhere (by disks i mean floppy, you know, the save icon?). We’ve come a long way since then. In most case PC users are making the most of wireless peripherals but most importantly there’s no longer any need for that bulky computer tower – cue the next wave of home computers and they are tiny!!

The lovely folks over at Minisforum have sent over their powerful GK50 PC for me to test drive. Join me while i take it for a spin…

Who Are Minisforum?

I actually first came across the brand on Instagram. They’ve been well known within the gadget/tech review circles for some time and seemingly have a strong reputation for efficient builds and good value.

Minisforum was founded in 2012 by a group of computer engineers with a passion for advanced technology and design, committed to innovating and manufacturing outstanding products.

“MINISFORUM wants to be the best innovator, manufacturer and supplier of mini-PCs and bring our customers unprecedented satisfaction and reliability with our products.”

The company prides themselves on being able to listen to the feedback of its customers and fold this into innovating new ideas for future products. As such, this is quite an exciting opportunity for myself as a tech reviewer and a user.

GK50 Mini PC

The GK50 is a fanless desktop mini PC and my first long-term liason with this type of computer. It is a “form factor computer” meaning it’s of a distinct techncal spcification and physical dimension. Roughly translated – it’s small and mighty!

The chasis is jet black and vented almost all over to allow air to move around the unit. Front side you’ve got 4 USB 3.0 Type A slots and a power button. Pretty useful for external drive access and USB keyboard/mouse setups. On the left there’s a vent and on the right hand side there’s a MicroSD card slot, 3.5mm Headphone out and Mic in ports. Round the back you’ve got a reset switch (indented, needle hole), DP (Display Port, 4K@60Hz), HDMI 2.0 port (4K@60Hz), 2 Ethernet ports and the 12V power supply input. On the bottom there’s some stylish rubber feet.

The GK50 casing also comes with a VESA bracket mount which allows for the GK50 to be attached to the back of a display or mounted on a wall.

Under the bonnet it features an Intel Pentium N5030 chip with 4 cores running from 1.1 to 3.1 GHz with 4 MB of cache memory supporting dual band WIFI and Bluetooth 4.0. It comes with Windows 10 Pro installed and support for Linux and Chromium.

As with any mini PC certain restrictions of use are in place but with the GK50 these seem to be much more limited than those of its peers. For instance you’re not going to be using this for any gaming all-nighters, but it’s important to note that the GK50 is perfectly competant for gaming and some users even reported running processor-heavy Unreal Engine 3 games with some adjustments to settings.

The lack of fan means the PC runs with virtually no noise but this is also a major factor in using the product. The PC is passively cooled which means it’s still going to heat up over time with basic use, or at least remain warm. What it comes down to is really about what you use it for.

The GK50 does make the perfect mini PC for surfing or as a dedicated multimedia PC and is ideal for admin or office work. The boot time for this PC is speedy and definitely a win in my book.

Personally i found it to be of great use when researching or blogging for the site, listening to music and watching videos. If you’re in the market for a mini PC this is a strong contender.

You can get hold of one from decent stockists or directly from Minisforum
