Noteworthy Podcasts : Mad Notions

Kicking off my series of handpicked podcasts is MAD NOTIONS.

Mad Notions is a comedy and music podcast hosted by musicians Mick McCullagh and Nathan O’Regan. It focuses on rock n’ roll legends, tall tales of popstars and the curious life of musicians. It’s geared toward anyone with a casual interest in music or bizarre stories. The presentation style is casual, digressive and has been likened to eavesdropping on casual pub chat.

Mick and Nathan are themselves working musicians and have been gigging separately around the UK and Ireland for most of their lives. They are original writers and performers, subsidizing their craft with pub gigs to keep themselves afloat.

Their shady pasts and the circumstances in which they met are shrouded in mystery: According to one legend, Mick met Nathan at a crossroads on Highway 61. Mick was looking to sell his soul to Nathan in return for mastery of the guitar. Nathan misunderstood, believing Mick to be a shoe salesman. They bonded over the misunderstanding and decided to start a podcast.
According to another legend, during a hedonistic tour of North America, Mick met Nathan when the latter thrashed his hotel room and drove a Mercedes into the hotel pool. Mick’s inflatable donut ring, a family heirloom, was burst in the melee. Mick sued Nathan but the case was settled out of court for an undisclosed fee. The two grew to be great friends during the proceedings and decided to start a podcast.
Most of their origin myths are easily dismissed as the stuff of urban legend: It’s generally agreed they met at a songwriting weekend and enjoyed each other’s chat.

The latest podcast focused on Charles Manson, his relationship with Denis Wilson of The Beach Boys and his quest for music stardom. Previous topics have included: Is Miley Cyrus an Illuminati clone? Is Elvis Alive?  And the great Blur or Oasis debate. Be warned, digressions are plentiful and verified facts are nuggets of truth in a sea of speculative bullshit.
